Redefinition Series: Yes, I do religion!

One of the main reasons we have so much division and believers who are not able to discern truth from falsehood is the language they have adopted as a reference point for their belief system and behavior. When the Apostolic and Prophetic movements began to gain momentum in American congregations, there was this emerging perspective of Kingdom, where the saying, “I don’t do religion, I do kingdom…” became the calling card.

The problem with this was a blatant disregard for scripture. I understood the notion, but it wasn’t scripturally based. As followers of Christ, we do have a religion. That religion is Service and Holiness.

James 1:26-27 states:

“26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this person’s religion is worthless. 27 Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.”

Service and Holiness is the religion of the disciples of Christ. Christianity is not a religion, it’s a man-made institution.

So, we have to be careful when repeating what we have heard without doing the proper research.
